Musk Says He’s ‘Back To Spending 24/7 At Work’ After Latest X Outage

Topline

Elon Musk called for “major operational improvements” for X on Saturday after the platform experienced a host of issues with its app and desktop website Saturday, marking the latest outage of services after the platform said it was still being impacted by a data center outage from earlier in the week.

Key Facts

Outage reports on DownDetector.com spiked at 9 a.m. EDT, reaching nearly 26,000 before falling to 22,729 by 9:13 a.m.

Musk, who recently said he would spend less time in his advisory position for President Donald Trump, said in a post addressing the outages that X needed “major operational improvements,” adding he has to be “super focused on X/xAI and Tesla.”

The issues appeared to be mostly resolved by 12:16 p.m., when outage reports dropped to about 500.

Nearly three quarters of the reported problems Saturday morning were based on the X app, while 23% were based on the platform’s desktop website.

X’s engineering team said in a statement Friday evening the platform was still experiencing issues from Thursday’s data center outage, noting login and signup services were unavailable for some users.

X’s developer platform said “Login with X and other X platform login flows are experiencing degraded performance.”

Crucial Quote

“Back to spending 24/7 at work and sleeping in conference/server/factory rooms,” Musk said. “I must be super focused on X/xAI and Tesla (plus Starship launch next week), as we have critical technologies rolling out. As evidenced by the 𝕏 uptime issues this week, major operational improvements need to be made. The failover redundancy should have worked, but did not.”

Key Background

Musk’s comments come a month after the Tesla chief said he would spend significantly less time in his role as Trump’s advisor and as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency. The billionaire made the commitment after facing backlash for his increasing involvement in the Trump administration, which concerned Tesla shareholders as the electric vehicle maker reported its worst quarterly profit since 2021 last month. Saturday’s issues marked at least the second outage for X this week. The platform ran into problems Thursday, when nearly 6,000 users reported issues with X’s website and app. X Engineering said it was aware of performance issues and was experiencing a data center outage. That same day, Wire reported a fire at X’s leased data center in Portland, Oregon, though it is unclear if the fire is directly related to the platform’s recent issues. “X is aware some of our users are experiencing performance issues on the platform today,” wrote the account. “We are experiencing a data center outage and the team is actively working to remediate the issue.”
