The recall affects 27,185 Cybertruck vehicles manufactured between Nov. 13, 2023, and Sept. 14, 2024, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration filing.
Tesla told regulators that, under unspecified conditions, the affected Cybertrucks may not fully complete a shutdown process before it turns back on, which could result in the rearview image display not displaying within two seconds.
A delayed rearview camera display may affect the driver’s view behind the vehicle and increase the risk of a crash, according to regulators.
Vehicles with rearview cameras in the U.S. must display an image within two seconds of turning on, the NHTSA said, and some of the Cybertrucks failed to display an image for up to eight seconds.
Tesla received 45 warranty claims and four field reports that may be related to the defect, though it is not aware of any crashes or injuries.
Tesla said it remedied the issue with a free over-the-air software update for the rearview camera on Sept. 19, ensuring it meets the regulatory requirement with a two-second response.

The automaker started deliveries for the Cybertruck last November, following a two-year delay amid production issues and battery supply restrictions. Tesla recalled nearly 3,900 Cybertrucks in April over gas pedals that could get stuck, causing the vehicles to accelerate unintentionally. Two notices were issued for Cybertrucks in June, after Tesla said some of the pickup trucks were installed with malfunctioning windshield wipers and improperly attached trunk bed trims, which could become loose and become a road hazard.
