Topline
Former President Donald Trump slammed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday and once again bragged he would end the war if he became president, as Trump has been angered by Zelensky’s recent criticism.

Key Facts
“Every time Zelensky comes to the United States he walks away with $100 billion, I think he’s the greatest salesman on Earth,” Trump said Tuesday at a campaign event in Georgia (the U.S. has actually provided about $60 billion in military assistance to Ukraine since the start of the war in 2022).
Trump also expressed doubt that Ukraine could win the war, while praising Russia’s military capabilities: “They beat Hitler, they beat Napoleon—that’s what they do, they fight.”
Trump also repeated his prediction that he would end the war, telling the audience “we’re stuck in that war unless I’m president.”
Trump’s comments are similar to ones he made a day earlier in Pennsylvania, where he said Zelensky wants Democrats “to win this election so badly” and said “the first thing” he would do if he’s elected is “call up Zelensky and call up President Putin and I’m gonna say ‘you gotta make a deal, this is crazy.’”
Trump made the comments after Zelensky told the New Yorker in a piece published Monday that “Trump doesn’t really know how to stop the war even if he might think he knows,” while also calling Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, “too radical.”
What To Watch For
Zelensky is in the U.S. this week for the United Nations General Assembly and a meeting with Biden and Harris Thursday at the White House.
Key Background
Trump has avoided saying explicitly whether he wants to see Ukraine win its war with Russia, sticking to the talking point that he simply wants the war to end, without saying how he would achieve peace. Trump has repeatedly praised Putin, calling him “genius” and “savvy” for recognizing two Ukrainian territories as independent just before Russia’s invasion.
